WINTON WOODS ATHLETICS
2005-2006
YEAR IN REVIEW
Winton Woods Athletics experienced another successful year during 2005-2006. On and off the field the Warriors represented our school and community with class and distinction.
In our league this year, the FAVC, Buckeye Division, the Girls Basketball Team and Boys Track Team were crowned Conference Champions. The Girls Basketball Team went undefeated in the league for the second straight year while the Boys Track Team captured the championship for the first time since 1999. Joining these teams with individual league recognition were our 6 League Players of the Year: Mike Perry, Cross Country; Jason Davis, Football Special Teams; Myia McCurdy, Girls Basketball; Carlos Tipton, Boys Bowling; Evelyn Cooper, Girls Track Runner; and Mallory Barnes, Girls Track Field Performer. We also had two of our coaches recognized by their colleagues as Coach of the Year, Tyler Shedd, Girls Bowling and Ron Wright, Boys Track.
Outside the league our Football Team qualified for the state playoffs for the first time since 1998 and once again was rewarded with participation in the Skyline Crosstown Showdown which kicks off the 2006 football season. This high profile event features some of the top teams in the city and allows us to showcase our athletes, school district, and communities. Also, our Girls Basketball Team finished the season ranked in the top 5 in the city, our Girls Bowling Team were Sectional Champs and our Girls Track Team were District Champs for the first time in school history. Other athletic accomplishments for the year include Mike Perry placing at the State Cross Country Meet for the second year in a row. Joining Mike with All-State recognition were Myia McCurdy, Girls Basketball, and Hosea Simpson and Jason Davis, Football. Our Boys and Girls Track Team also had a great year sending 15 athletes to the State Meet where Mallory Barnes finished 4th in the discus throw, Mike Perry 6th in the 1600 meter run and Corey Blake, Joe Booker, Bryon Toran and Ron’Sae Harrison 4th in the 4x400 relay.
Individually, 25 Warrior athletes have been honored on the Enquirer All-City Teams, 56 on the All-League Teams, and 49 on the FAVC All-Academic Teams, which requires a 3.5 G.P.A. and a varsity letter. At this time 14 seniors have signed letters of intent to play on the collegiate level next fall. While there is potential of signing more athletes this summer, the seniors have already earned over $600,000 in scholarship awards. One final impressive honor was Myia McCurdy being named to the 2006 Parade All-American Girls Basketball Team.
The school year saw other accomplishments off the field as well. Winton Woods High School was one of only 100 schools in the State of Ohio to receive the prestigious Harold A. Meyer Sportsmanship Award for the 4th year in a row. Our basketball teams hosted the 8th annual “Warrior Madness” kicking off their seasons and raising over 400 canned goods and $342 in cash for the SOUL Ministry Food Pantry’s Holiday Assistance Program. In addition, our football team continued their tutoring and mentoring program with the 1st graders at Winton Forest Elementary, our Boys Basketball Team served meals at the Drop-In Center on Thanksgiving Day and our new educational/athletic facility is scheduled to be completed in August.
Winton Woods is very proud of our athletes and their accomplishments
this year and look forward to an even more productive year in 2006-2007.
