SPRING SPORTS ROUND-UP

BASEBALL: Coach Mike DeMain’s squad has gotten off to a slow start, but has racked up two wins in the eight games they have played thus far. The victories have been registered against Finneytown (10-8) and Walnut Hills (11-6). Seniors Matt Cooper, Jack Stenger and Montel Boone are the offensive team leaders. Copper’s .333 average leads the squad with Stenger’s .320 and Boone’s .304 close behind. Boone also has a team leading seven RBI’s. Stenger picked up a complete game victory against Walnut Hills, allowing only six hits while striking out seven Eagle batters.

Paige Zellars is leading the team with a batting average of .385. Zellars also has 18 RBI as well as two home runs. Also contributing to the team effort has been Mandy Mercurio (.360 batting average) and Melanie Median (.346 batting average).

Upcoming important tournaments are the prestigious Coaches Classic (April 27th and April 29th) and the FAVC Buckeye Division Championships at Mason on Tuesday, May 2nd.

BOYS TRACK: “Dominating” would be the best word to describe the Warriors track efforts thus far. No less than four Warriors presently have the best times in individual events within the FAVC Buckeye Division, while relay squads have posted the best times in three events. Julian Johnson’s 0:10.94 time in the 100-meter dash is the best time in the FAVC thus far while Dominique Eubanks is close behind in second place with a 0:11.10 time. Brian Lee’s 0:22.60 is the division’s best in the 200-meter dash. Corie Blake posted a 0:51.40 time in the 400-meter dash to lead the division while Michael Perry’s 9:36.00 is the best time in the 3200-dash. Division leading relay times have been posted in the 400-meter relay, the 800-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay. Coach Wright’s squad was ranked seventh in The Cincinnati Enquirer’s preseason city track poll and looks forward to the FAVC Championships on May 10th and May 12th.

GIRLS TRACK: The Lady Warriors have posted some impressive performances and were ranked sixth in the preseason city track poll as conducted by The Cincinnati Enquirer. Mallory Barnes has Buckeye Division best efforts in shotput (37’08.00”) and discuss (124’01.00”) while Tracee Hamner (5’04.00”) has the best mark in the high jump. Other Lady Warriors who are ranked high in individual events are: Evelyn Cooper (2nd in the 100-meter dash and 4th in the 200-meter dash), Angel Edwards (2nd in shotput and 3rd in discuss), and Shauna Smith (3rd in the 100 high hurdles and 4th in the 300 meter IM hurdles). “WELCOME TO THE SWEATHOUSE”
It is well known that Warrior athletes put many hours of time and effort into weight training during their time at Winton Woods High School, not only during the season, but off-season also. The pay-off usually is in the form of victories for the team and all-league, all-city, all-district or all-state recognition for the individual. However, once in a while the effort is recognized on the national level. Senior football player Marcus Young has been invited to participate in a national power lifting tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 20th. He is the first Winton Woods student-athlete to compete in such an event and is the only Winton Woods athlete to ever power clean over 300 pounds. (His power lift of 325 pounds is the school record!) Best wishes and good luck to Marcus as he competes against some of the best high school lifters in the country!!

FAVC EXPANDS & REALIGNS DIVISIONS

The Fort Ancient Valley Conference has expanded to eighteen schools and has realigned the league members into three divisions starting in the fall of the 2006-07 school year: Buckeye Division, Cardinal Division and the new Scarlet Division. Winton Woods will remain in the reformed Buckeye Division, along with Anderson, Glen Este, Harrison, Loveland and Mason. The Cardinal Division will consist of former Buckeye Division members Amelia and Walnut Hills, along with Kings, Little Miami, Turpin and Wilmington. The newly created Scarlet Division will have FAVC holdovers Northwest, Norwood and Ross competing with newly admitted Edgewood, Mt. Healthy and Oxford Talawanda. The league feels this will create better balance and competition within each of the divisions and the schools in the divisions will be better geographically aligned.

FAVC TICKET INCREASES

In order to keep up with constant cost increases for officials, uniforms, equipment, etc., the FAVC has increased ticket prices next year for the following sports. These new prices are comparable to other major leagues in the city including the GMC and the GCL. The ticket prices below reflect the changes for the 2006-2007 school year:

Football
$6.00 adult/$3.00 pre-sale
student
Varsity - All tickets at the gate
will be $6.00 for anyone 5
years and up
Frosh/JV - $4.00 adult/$3.00
students

Volleyball - $6.00 adult/$3.00
students

FOOTBALL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER

The 2006 football season should be an exciting one for the Warriors as they prepare to compete in the fiercely competitive Buckeye Division of the FAVC. The Warriors will open the season against Wilmington as part of the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown on Thursday, August 24th at Princeton High School’s Viking Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm and ticket information will be forthcoming. This is the fourth straight year that the Warriors have participated in this prestigious event, the most of any FAVC school. Re-dedication of newly renovated Charles Fredrick Stadium will be Friday, September 8th against Akron Tallmage and the fifth annual “Hall of Fame Night” will be on Friday, September 22nd versus new FAVC member Edgewood. Other home games will be against Anderson, Harrison and Loveland while road contests will be at Lakota West, Dayton Colonel White, Mason and Glen Este.
