BOB AMBURGEY
(Inducted in 2005)

Bob Amburgey was a three-sport performer at Greenhills High School, earning varsity letters in football, baseball and basketball. An “All-City” honoree in football he earned three letters and was named Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior. His play on the Pioneer defense earned him Best Defensive Back awards and allowed him to be named to the “All-League” squad following his junior and senior seasons.
Bob’s high school football career was crowned with his being named to the “All-City” team. His athletic success wasn’t confined to the gridiron however, earning four varsity letters in baseball and being named to the “All-League” team as a junior and senior. Following graduation from Greenhills in 1964, Bob enrolled at the University of Cincinnati to play football for the Bearcats where he continued to be an outstanding player. During the 1966 season his defensive play earned him many awards including:
The Brig Owens Award (Most Outstanding Defensive Back), first team “All-Missouri Valley Conference”, and honorable mention “All-American”. Bob graduated from UC in 1969, earning a B.A. in economics and helped coach the football team as a graduate assistant coach.

STEVE D. APPLEGATE
(Inducted in 2002)

A 1966 graduate of Greenhills High School, Steve Applegate was a three-year varsity starter for the Pioneer football team. He was named All-League and All-City as a junior and as a senior. During his senior year in 1965 he was also named Captain of the football squad as well as "Most Valuable Lineman" and "Most Valuable Player". In addition to football, Steve also lettered in track and baseball during his years at Greenhills. After graduation from Greenhills in 1966, Steve entered Indiana University and walked on the football squad earning a scholarship after his first semester. His hard work and effort paid off during his sophomore year in 1967 when he started the last three games for the Hoosiers, including their appearance in the 1968 Rose Bowl game against the O.J. Simpson led U.S.C. Trojans. Steve finished his career at Indiana by starting his junior and senior seasons and attaining Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors following his senior season. Like his senior year at Greenhills, Steve was named Captain and earned "Most Valuable Offensive Lineman" awards as a senior at Indiana.

 


DAN BAMONTE
(Inducted in 2006)

Involved with school district athletics for over 24-years, Dan Bamonte helped in the development of over 2,500 scholar-athletes at Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools. Arriving at Forest Park in 1977 as football associate head coach and defensive coordinator, Dan helped fellow Hall-of-Fame football coach Lou Cynkar post a .670 winning percentage along with winning 11 league championships. His defensive units finished in Cincinnati’s “Top 5” 16 times, including one #1 finish. Many of the 100 plus scholarship winners, All-Americans, and NFL players that he helped coach came from the defensive side of the ball. Coach Bamonte also served as head wrestling coach at both Forest Park and Winton Woods for 14 years. During his tenure the program produced many league and sectional champions, along with three district champions and three state placers. Dan even applied his coaching talents to track and field as head coach for two seasons of both the boys and girls squads, qualifying several athletes for the state meet. One of Dan’s most recognized activities involved the production of over 50 pep assemblies in support of Charger and Warrior athletic squads. Dan and Ed Westerkamp, a fellow Hall-of-Famer, were the famed “Blues Brothers” who ran these exciting spirit events.

 

 

CALVIN B. BOSTIC, JR.
(Inducted in 2002)

One of the most decorated athletes in Forest Park High School history, Calvin Bostic, Jr. excelled in football and track at the high school level. A 1990 graduate of Forest Park, Calvin won All-League and All-District honors for the football Chargers. As good as his football efforts were however track and field is where Calvin's talents really came to the forefront. During his four years with the Charger track and field program, Calvin was named All-League, All-District, All-City and All-State. He was also named "All-American" in three events by USA Today. On the state level, Calvin was a state champion in three events and led the Chargers track and field teams to back-to-back state championships in 1988 and 1989. His high school success resulted in his attending The University of Toledo where he won numerous honors and was named Captain every year while a member of the Rockets track and field squad. Calvin was a Mid-American Conference champion in four events, including winning the long jump championship every year of his eligibility. Like his athletic accomplishments at Forest Park, his collegiate efforts were recognized with his induction into The University of Toledo Hall of Fame.

 

 

ROB CAMPBELL
(Forest Park High School, 1982)
Without question one of the best soccer players ever to attend any of the three high schools that make up the athletic history of the Winton Woods City School District, Rob Campbell earned high honors on both the high school and collegiate level.  A 1982 graduate of Forest Park High School, Rob started every game in his four-years with the Chargers.  In 1981 he established a new school record for assists in a season and finished his career as the leading scorer in school history.  He was named team Most Valuable Player in 1980 and 1981 as well as team captain as a senior in 1981.  Rob earned “All-League” honors in 1980 and 1981 as well as “All-City”, “All-State” and “All-Midwest” recognition in 1981.  After graduation, Rob took his soccer skills to Wright State University where, like he did at Forest Park, was a four year varsity starter for the Raiders.  His playing career at Wright State included many awards and accolades including:  Team MVP in 1985, winner of the “Raider Award” in 1982, 1984 and 1985, “All-Midwest” and “All-Ohio” honors in 1983, 1984 and 1985, “All-American” recognition in 1985 as well as establishing new school records for career goals and assists.  Following his graduation with a B.S. in Business Administration, he was named to the Wright State University Hall of Fame in 1999 as well as the Wright State University “Walk of Fame” in 2003.    

 

 


JOE CUSHING
(Inducted in 2005)

An all-around athlete, Joe Cushing earned eleven varsity letters while playing football, basketball and baseball at Greenhills High School. An “All-City” athlete in football and baseball Joe was also an outstanding student as evidenced by his membership in the National Honor Society all four years at Greenhills. As a four-year letter winner in football, Joe played both left end and right half back, earning 1st Team “All-League” and “All-City” honors at both positions as a junior and senior. On the baseball diamond Joe earned four varsity letters and helped lead the Pioneers to the Ohio Class B state championship as a senior in 1956. An “All-League” first baseman as a freshman, sophomore and junior, he also played on the South All-Star squad in the annual Ohio North-South All-Star Game in 1956. His overall athleticism is obvious in the fact that in the one season he lettered in basketball as a sophomore, he was named to the “All-League” team. After graduation in 1956, Joe enrolled at Indiana University and played baseball for the Hoosiers before leaving school to become a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Joe spent eight years as a flight instructor and accumulated more than 500 combat missions during the Vietnam War. For his heroism in Vietnam, Joe was awarded the Bronze Star as well as several other medals for heroism from both the United States as well as from The Republic of South Vietnam. He retired from Delta Airlines after spending thirty-two years as a commercial pilot.

 

"COACH" LOU CYNKAR
(Inducted in 2002)


For 22 years "Coach" Lou Cynkar impacted the lives of over 2,500 student athletes, not just in the perspective of victories and championships, but in the realm of grasping the lessons of life. During his years of service at Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools he helped over 100 athletes receive full scholarships to colleges across the country. Combining success on the football field with success in track and field, Coach Cynkar won eleven league football championships and two state championships in track. His Charger and Warrior football teams won 151 games, including one undefeated season and three 9-1 seasons, while posting an overall winning percentage of .670. Four of his teams qualified for the state playoffs, including his last squad, the 1998 Winton Woods Warriors. During his 22 years as a football coach in the school district, Coach Cynkar had the privilege of developing six Parade High School "All-Americans" and seven NFL players. In addition to the two state titles in track, his Forest Park and Winton Woods track teams won two regional titles, four sectional titles and one city championship. For all of his football and track accomplishments Coach Cynkar was recognized as "Coach-of-the-Year" on a city level or higher 18 times including Ohio "Coach-of-the Year" honors once each in football and in track.

 

 

ALESIA DAVIS-PEAKS
(Inducted in 2005)

One of the best basketball players to ever play at Forest Park High School, Alesia Davis-Peaks helped lead the Lady Chargers to a perfect 28-0 record and the 1984 Division II state basketball championship. Her athletic talents helped her earn four varsity letters in basketball along with a varsity letter each in softball and track. On the basketball hardwood, Alesia became the first Forest Park player, male or female, to score 1,000 points in a career and routinely led the Lady Chargers in scoring and assists. In addition to the state championship, she helped lead the Lady Chargers to three league championships, two district championships, and one regional title during her four years at Forest Park. A three-time “All-League”, “All-City” and “All-State” honoree, Alesia also won acclaim as The Cincinnati Enquirer’s “Player of the Year” for Division II. Other post-season honors included being inducted into the Milky Way Foundation for Women and playing on the Junior Olympic basketball team. Following graduation in 1985, her playing career continued at Kent State University and then at Xavier University where an ankle fracture ended her playing days. She has remained active in the community and in 2005, as an assistant coach of the Lady Warriors freshman squad, she helped lead Winton Woods to the FAVC championship.

 


ALEX DAVIS
(Inducted in 2004)

Alex Davis graduated from Forest Park High School in 1989 as one of the most decorated and recognized basketball players in school district history. A three-time "All-League", "All-City", and "AAll-State" honoree, he played four years for the Chargers and ended his playing career as the all-time leading scorer in Forest Park history with 1,945 points. His 46 points scored against McNicholas is one of the biggest single game outputs for any high school in the history of the Winton Woods City School District. As a senior in 1989 Alex was named to the prestigious "Who's Who in High School Basketball" list and was named the Ohio Division II "Player of the Year". Alex continued his education and playing career by accepting a full scholarship from The Ohio State University. As a Buckeye he was named to the Big Ten Conference's "All-Freshman" team as was a member of two Big Ten championship squads as well as participating in the NCAA tournament on three separate occasions. His Forest Park Chargers jersey ison permanent display in the Winton Woods High School gymnasium lobby, one of only five school district basketball players to be accorded that honor.

 

 

CLINTON DAVIS
(Inducted in 2005)

Another in a long line of standout athletes who graduated from Forest Park High School, Clinton Davis excelled in football and track. In the fall, he played on the Charger football team, eventually earning three varsity letters. It was during the spring on the track, however that Clinton’s talents were showcased. A four time national champion and three time state champion in the 110 high hurdles and the 300 low hurdles,
Clinton helped lead Forest Park to its first team state championship in 1988. He was a three-time state champion in the 110 high hurdles (1986, 1987 and 1988) and established a new state record in the event in 1987. Clinton was also a four-time Junior Olympic national champion in each of his four years in high school. Along the way he collected “All-League”, “All-City”, “All-State”, and “All-American” recognition. After graduating from Forest Park in 1988 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a Gulf War veteran in 1991. Before his discharge in 1992, he managed to find time to put his athletic abilities in the forefront by being runner-up in the All Army Track and Field Championships in 1990. Clinton has been passing on his track expertise to others as a coach at the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy, while also serving as a U.S.A.T.F official.

 

 

GABY DOWNEY
(Inducted in 2002)

A winner of twelve varsity letters, Gaby Downey combined superb athletic performance with success in the classroom. Graduating from Forest Park High School in 1985 with a 4.0 grade point average and membership in the National Honor Society, Gaby also led the Lady Chargers to a perfect 28-0 record and the 1984 state championship in basketball. During her four years at Forest Park, she also helped the Lady Chargers win three league titles, two district titles and one regional championship. She graduated as the second all-time leading scorer in school history. Other notable awards during her years at Forest Park included being named All-League in volleyball twice, All-League three times in basketball, All-City as a junior and senior, Player-of-the-Year in Cincinnati as a senior, MVP of the 1984 state basketball tournament, Forest Park High School "Athlete of the Year" in 1984 and 1985 and being named "Career Athlete" of the Class of 1985. Gaby continued her athletic and academic excellence during her years at Miami University. She was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic team as well as winning NCAA All-Academic honors. She completed her collegiate career by being named Miami's Scholar Athlete-of-the Year in 1990.


DEBBIE DUNN-BLAKELEY
(Forest Park High School, 1988)

A winner of twelve varsity letters at Forest Park High School, Debbie Dunn’s versatility and hard work enabled her to excel both on the field as well as in the classroom.  While at Forest Park, she earned four letters each in soccer, basketball and softball and earned “All-League” honors in all three sports.  In softball she was named “All-League” in 1988 as well as the winner of the “Charger Award” in 1987.  On the basketball court, Debbie was “All-League” in 1987 and 1988, as well as being named Cross County Conference “Player of the Year” as a senior in 1988.  As a member of the Lady Charger soccer team, she was named team MVP in 1986 and 1987 as well as being named captain for the 1987 season.  She was also named to the “All-Metro” team in 1986 and was 2nd team “All-State” in both 1986 and 1987.  Debbie’s multiple talents were recognized by her being named Forest Park’s “Athlete of the Year” as a sophomore, junior and senior as well as being honored as the school’s “Outstanding Career Athlete” for 1984-1988.  A soccer scholarship awaited her at Wright State University and she continued her athletic and academic excellence as a four year varsity letter winner for the Lady Raiders.  She was named team MVP twice as well as team co-captain as a junior and as a senior and graduated as the all-time assist leader in school history.  She earned a B.A. degree in Social Work in 1982, a Masters Degree in Education in 2006 and was inducted into the Wright State University “Walk of Fame” in 2004.

 

 

EARL EDMONDS
(Inducted in 2003)

Recognized as one of the all-time best high school basketball coaches in southwest Ohio history, Earl Edmonds coached at both Forest Park and Greenhills High Schools.  A 1964 graduate of Greenhills, Earl played football and basketball for the Pioneers, earning All-League honors in basketball his junior and senior years.  After graduating from Western Kentucky University in 1968 Earl came back to Greenhills and was an assistant basketball coach for five years before landing his first head coaching position at Talawanda High School in 1973. One year later, Earl began a fourteen-year run as basketball coach at district high schools by accepting the position at Forest Park.  Three years later Earl became head coach at Greenhills, where he led the Pioneers for eleven seasons.  His fourteen seasons at Forest Park and Greenhills resulted in a 234-81 record, good enough for a winning percentage of 74%.  His Charger and Pioneer squads won six league championships, two districts championships and had two regional runner-up finishes.  He was named league "Coach of the Year" five times and Cincinnati Division II "Coach of the Year" three times.  In 1993 Earl was elected to the District 16 Coaches Hall of Fame and in 2001 he was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame.

MARK EHLEN
(Inducted in 2004)

Coach of the only basketball state championship team to date in school district history, Mark Ehlen has enjoyed coaching success on the high school and collegiate levels for over twenty-five years. As head coach at Forest Park High School from 1980 thru 1985, the Lady Chargers compiled an overall record of 100-18 while winning three league titles and three district championships. His 1984 Lady Chargers went 28-0 and won the Ohio AAA championship with a thrilling 48-47 overtime victory over perennial power Canton McKinley. Coach Ehlen's efforts at Forest Park were recognized on the city and state levels as he was named league Coach of the Year on four occasions, city Coach of the Year by The Cincinnati Enquirer twice and was named Ohio AAA Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1985. In 1987 he began his collegiate coaching career by taking over the reigns of the Xavier University Lady Musketeers program where, in 1992 he was named MCC "Coach of the Year". Presently the head coach at the University of Toledo, he has been named Mid-America Conference "Coach the Year" on four occasions and has guided the Lady Rockets to five appearances in the NCAA tournament. In 1986 he was elected into the Cincinnati Women's Sports hall of Fame and was elected into the Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

TOM ELFERS
(Inducted in 2004)

One of the best golfers in school district history, Tom Elfers graduated from Greenhills High School in 1968. He earned four varsity letters in golf and was named captain as a sophomore, junior and senior. His overall abilities on the links allowed him to qualify for the state tournament as a junior and as a senior. During his years at Greenhills he also earned a varsity letter in football and two varsity letters in basketball. As a senior, he was named captain of the basketball squad and scored the final five points of the game as the Pioneers upset top ranked Middletown in the 1968 state tournament. In recognition of his outstanding basketball skills, he was named First Team "All-City" by The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1968. Upon graduation from high school Tom enrolled at The Ohio State University where he played golf for the Buckeyes, earning three varsity letters as well as many academic honors. A 1972 graduate of Ohio State, he earned a Bachelor of Science in education and mathematics and taught at the high school level for thirty years. His golfing skills have won him wide spread acclaim on the regional level as he is a three-time Cincinnati Met champion, symbolic of the top amateur golfer in the Cincinnati area. Tom's first Met championship came in 1991and he won back-to-back championships in 1995 and again in 1996. He presently serves as a part-time golf coach at Xavier University.

MARCUS WAYNE EVANS, JR.
(Inducted in 2006)

A three-sport athlete at Forest Park High School, Marcus Evans, Jr. played on six league championship teams and was a member of the Charger 1988 track state championship squad. An All-State performer in football and basketball, Marcus played on Forest Park’s first undefeated football squad and was a member of three league championship football teams. His high school football honors included being named team captain, receiving All-City and All-State recognition, playing in the North-South All-Star game, and being named to “Street and Smith’s” All-American team. Upon his graduation from Forest Park in 1988, Marcus attended the University of Tennessee before transferring to Youngstown State University. While at Youngstown State he played in two national championship football games and was a member of the 1991 team that beat Marshall for the Division IAA title. His play on the field for the Penguins earned him the role of captain along with being named as a Division IAA “All-American”. Marcus earned his degree in Arts and Science from Youngstown State University in 1993.

EBONY EVANS TREGRE
(Inducted in 2003)

Winner of 12 varsity letters during her high school career at Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools, Ebony Evans graduated as one of the most decorated and best all-around athletes ever to attend high school in the school district.  Participating in tennis (girls and boys), basketball, soccer and softball, Ebony earned All-Conference honors in girls tennis, soccer and softball and All-City honors in girls tennis.  In tennis Ebony went 36-0 during the regular season as a sophomore and junior, earning conference "Player of the Year" awards both years and wa Sectional Champion as a junior.  As a senior, Ebony missed the girls tennis season in the fall due to injury but competed with the boys squad during the spring, earning All-City "Honorable Mention" and playing #1 doubles in the boys sectional tournament. Voted Class President during her freshman and junior years she was also the first freshman in Forest Park High School history to win the "Female Athlete of the Year" award.  Following her graduation from Winton Woods in 1992, Ebony attended Xavier University of Louisiana on a tennis scholarship where she was team captain all four years.  After earning her BS degree Ebony went on to earn a MS degree from the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine as well as a Juris Doctorate from UC's College of Law.

CHARLIE FREDRICK
(Inducted in 2002)

Charlie Fredrick's hand touched all three high schools that make up the athletic history of the Winton Woods City School District. A 1959 graduate of The University of Notre Dame and a thirty-eight year veteran of teaching and administration at the high school level, Charlie came to Greenhills High School in 1967. Throughout his tenure at Greenhills, Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools, athletic and academic success abounded. Numerous league championships were won and two state championships claimed: 1984 Forest Park Lady Chargers basketball and 1986 Greenhills Pioneers boys cross-county. In 1996 the school district re-named the football stadium at Winton Woods High School, Charles A. Fredrick Stadium in his honor. However, Charlie's influence and notoriety reached beyond the school district. He served as President, President-elect and Secretary of the Southwest Ohio Athletic Association, was inducted into the OIAAA Hall of Fame in 1994 and received the OIAAA Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award in 1997.



JOSEPH FREDRICK
(Inducted in 2002)

Recognized as the best boys basketball player in the history of Greenhills High School, Joseph Fredrick graduated as the Pioneer's all-time leading scorer. During the course of his career, Joe also finished as the all-time career assist leader, had the highest career scoring average, best career and season free throw percentage, and scored the most points in a game with 42. Post season honors won were numerous including All-League MVP in 1984, 1985 and 1986; All-District in 1984, 1985 and 1986; All-City in 1984, 1985 and 1986, "Player-of-the-Year" in Cincinnati as a senior in 1986 and first team All-State in 1986. Upon his graduation from Greenhills in 1986, Joe entered The University of Notre Dame and played basketball for the Fightin' Irish until his graduation in 1990. He was a three-year starter and was named "Most Valuable Player" at the end of his junior season. During the course of his collegiate career he was a 1,000+ point scorer, was named to a NCAA Regional "All-Tournament" team, and finished as the all time career three-point percentage shooter in Notre Dame basketball history.

MAUREEN FREDRICK DAVIN
(Inducted in 2003)

A 1983 graduate of Greenhills High School, Maureen Fredrick is unrivaled as the best girls basketball player in Pioneer history.  An All-League honoree and team leading scorer all four years, Maureen started every game of her high school basketball career.  She received All-City recognition every year, earning 1st team status following her senior year.  As a senior Maureen also was named 2nd team All-District, "Special Mention" All-State and "Honorable Mention" All-American.  Maureen left Greenhills as the holder of numerous records including: career points scored, most points scored in a game, most points scored in a season, and most field goals in a game, season and career.  In addition to basketball, Maureen also excelled at tennis.  Like basketball she earned All-League honors all four years and was named All-City and All-State as a senior.  As a senior she and her doubles partner Holly Hannah won the Sectional Championship and finished fourth in the state tournament. In softball Maureen earned three varsity letters and was named All-League as a junior.  Her athletic talents earned her a basketball scholarship to Xavier University where she graduated in 1988 after earning four varsity letters.  She led the Lady Musketeers in scoring as a sophomore and finished her career as one of the top ten free throw shooters in Xavier history.

BRIAN H. GIBSON
(Greenhills High School, 1976)

Brian Gibson’s basketball and academic abilities have helped to propel him into a life of success on many different levels and locations.  As a member of the highly successful Greenhills High School basketball teams of the early-to-mid 1970’s, Brian was the point guard on the team that finished with a city best 21-2 record, and led the squad in scoring average and assists.  Brian finished the 1976 season by earning “All-League”, “All-City” and “All-District” recognition and was also named to the “All-State” 2nd Team.  Upon graduation from Greenhills in 1976, Brian enrolled at Northwestern University where he was a four year letterman and academic “All-American”.  As a senior point guard for the Wildcats in 1980, he helped engineer a two game sweep of defending national champion Michigan State as well as additional upsets of nationally ranked Michigan and “Final Four” participant Purdue.  His highly successful senior year included his being named Co-Captain, handing out eight assists against Michigan (the eighth best total in school history) and finishing 15th in the country for free throw percentage (the fifth best total in Northwestern history).  He concluded his collegiate athletic career by being named Northwestern’s winner of the “Billy McKinney Award” which is bestowed on a graduating Northwestern senior in any sport and is based on leadership and constant effort.  Brian earned his B.A. in Political Science in 1980, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1983 and a Masters in International Law in 1985 from the London School of Economics.

GLENN GIBSON
(Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools, 1986-2001)

A highly successful soccer coach during his sixteen years with the Winton Woods City School District, Glenn Gibson coached varsity squads at Forest Park and Winton Woods high schools to 219 victories and a .742 winning percentage.  His Charger and Warrior teams accounted for two city championships in 1991 and 1996, eight league championships, four sectional titles and one appearance in the state tournament “Final Four” in 1987.  While his teams were receiving recognition throughout the state of Ohio, Glenn was quietly accumulating awards and accolades of his own.  His tenure at Forest Park and Winton Woods resulted in his being named league “Coach of the Year” eight times, city “Coach of the Year” by The Cincinnati Enquirer three times and state “Coach of the Year” once.  He also served as President of the Southwest Ohio High School Soccer Coaches Association for nine years and as a board member of the Ohio High School Soccer Coaches Association for eleven years.  Glenn’s involvement in soccer, however, goes well beyond his high school experience.  For over 20 years he enjoyed tremendous success in Forest Park’s SAY and select youth programs amassing an additional 311 wins and a state championship in 1987 with the Forest Park Select Soccer Club.  These youth programs, during his tenure, kept soccer in the area strong and provided a steady stream of talent to the district soccer teams.

DON GILLESPIE
(Inducted in 2004)

Donnie Gillespie earned eight varsity letters in three different sports as a member of Forest Park High School and Winton Woods High School soccer, basketball and football teams. A three-time soccer MVP, Donnie earned All-League and All-City honors during his junior and senior years as well as an All-State "Honorable Mention" following his senior season. As a junior he led the city in assists while playing on the Warrior squad that won the city championship in 1991. On the basketball hardwood, Donnie was a three-year varsity starter and graduated in 1993 as the school's all-time assist leader. As with soccer, he played on the 1992-93 Winton Woods basketball team that won the city championship with a 23-2 record. A two time All-League member, he was also named All-City as a senior and capped his high school athletic career with a nomination to the prestigious McDonalds All-America basketball squad. Donnie graduated in 1993 and was named "Athlete of the Year" for 1992-93 as well as "Career Athlete" for 1989-93. A true scholar-athlete, he continued his stellar academic and athletic success on a full basketball scholarship from Urbana University. His college highlights include being named NAIA Division II "Honorable Mention All-America", being named captain of the Urbana squad as a senior and setting the school's 3-point shooting record. After several seasons as an assistant basketball coach at the high school level, Donnie was named head basketball coach of the Warriors in the Spring of 2004.

 

CARLTON GRAY
(Inducted in 2002)

The 1989 winner of the "Dial Award" given to the top high school scholar/athlete in the nation, Carlton Gray graduated from Forest Park High School the holder of numerous athletic awards and scholastic achievements. Participating in football, basketball, baseball and track he helped lead Charger squads to five league championships, four district titles, three regional titles and one state championship. As a senior Carlton was named All-City in football, basketball and track, "Player-of-the-Year" by The Cincinnati Enquirer in football, High School "All-American" by Parade Magazine and USA Today, "Defensive MVP" of the Ohio North/South All Star game, and anchored the state champion Forest Park 4x100 meter relay squad. After graduating in the top five of his class and being named "Career Athlete" for the Class of 1989, Carlton entered U.C.L.A. where he continued his athletic and academic success. A four-year football starter for the Bruins, Carlton's career at U.C.L.A. resulted in his being named All-Pac Ten twice, Academic All-Pac Ten twice, GTE "Academic All-American" twice and consensus "All-American" as a senior in 1992. Drafted in 1993 by the Seattle Seahawks, Carlton enjoyed an eight-year NFL career and was inducted into the LaRosa's Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.


HOLLY HANNA
(Greenhills High School, 1983)

One of the best tennis players in school district history, Holly Hanna graduated from Greenhills High School in 1983 after winning eleven varsity letters in three different sports.  She earned three letters as a member of the Lady Pioneers basketball squad and was a four year starter on the softball team.  On the softball diamond, she was the team’s “Most Valuable Player” three times and was named “All-League” in 1981, 1982 and 1983.  It was on the tennis court however, where Holly’s star really shined.  She was named team MVP all four years as she played #1 Singles.  Her 65 singles wins established a new Greenhills High School record and she was named to the “All-League” team all four years as a varsity player.  As a senior in 1983 she earned 1st Team “All-Southwest District 83”, “All-City” and “All-State” honors. Holly also played doubles, and teamed up with fellow Winton Woods Athletic Hall of Famer Maureen Fredrick to reach the state quarterfinals as juniors in 1982 and then the state semi finals in 1983.  Northern Kentucky University offered her a full scholarship to play both tennis and softball and Holly accepted the offer to continue her education and athletic career.  While at NKU, she earned three letters in tennis and four letters in softball.  She capped her collegiate career by being named to the 1987 Great Lakes Valley Conference “All-League” team as a member of the Lady Norse softball squad as well as receiving her undergraduate degree in Political Science and History.

BOB HANS, JR.
(Inducted in 2004)

A three-sport performer at Greenhills High School, Bob Hans, Jr. used his high school and college experiences to become one of the best high school cross country coaches in the state of Florida. Participating in basketball, cross country and track for the Pioneers, Bob earned recognition as an outstanding scholar-athlete. He was named Most Valuable Runner as a junior and senior for cross country and was named captain of the 1967 Pioneer squad which won the district championship. That achievement allowed Greenhills to participate in the state cross country meet for the first time in school history. Also as a senior competing with the track team, he broke the school record in the 880-meter run, a record which had stood for twenty years. After graduating from Greenhills in 1967 Tom continued his education and athletic career at Defiance College where he ran track for four years and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. His high school coaching career began after graduation from Defiance when he returned to Greenhills as cross country coach. His coaching resume grew with a move to Florida in 1974. Over the next thirty years his cross country teams earned 21 trips to the state meet, placing in the "Top Five" on six different occasions. In 2003 the cross country invitational at Ridgeview High School in Orange, Florida was renamed the Bob Hans Cross Country Invitational in his honor.

DALE HEIDOTTING
(Inducted in 2005)

A 1959 graduate of Greenhills High School, Dale Heidotting played on a state championship team in high school and on two national championship teams in college. While at Greenhills, he earned four letters in baseball and, as a freshman, was the only non-junior or senior member of the 1956 Pioneer team that won the Ohio Class B state championship. On the basketball court, Dale was a four-year letterman and earned “All-League” and “All-City” honors. As a senior, he finished fourth in the city in scoring, 1st Team “All-City” by both The Cincinnati Enquirer as well as The Cincinnati Post and Times-Star and was named “Player of the Year” by The Cincinnati Enquirer. (One of his top high school memories is being part of the 1959 Pioneer basketball team that narrowly missed upsetting the nationally ranked, Jerry Lucas led Middletown Middies in the district tournament.) Dale continued his basketball playing at the University of Cincinnati where he was a member of the 1961 and 1962 Bearcat national championship teams. He was also a member of the 1963 UC quintet that lost a chance for a third straight national championship in the final game to Loyola in overtime. He finished the 1963 season as the winner of UC’s Best Field Goal Percentage Award and graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1965 with a B.S. in architecture.

 

 

ROBERT J. HITE, II
(Winton Woods High School, 2002)

Recognized as being the best basketball player to ever play for Winton Woods High School, Robert Hite has continued his success on the basketball court through the college ranks on to the highest level:  the National Basketball Association.  He lettered in basketball all four years at Winton Woods, was a three-time team MVP and led the Warriors to four league championships and a 81-12 record during his career.  Robert was named 1st Team “All-FAVC” three times and was FAVC “ Player of the Year” in 2001 and 2002.  A two-time 1st Team “All-City” and three-time “All-Southwest District” player, he was named as the 2002 “Player of the Year” by both The Cincinnati Enquirer as well as the Southwest District.  He capped his senior season off by taking the Warriors to the state championship game, being named as 1st Team “All-State” and co-winner of the Ohio “Player of the Year” award.  Upon his graduation in 2002, Robert owned the school’s career scoring record with 1,384 points.  A basketball scholarship at the University of Miami awaited and Robert did not hesitate in continuing his strong performance.  During his career with the Hurricanes he averaged 14.2 points per game, was named Big East “Player of the Week” as a sophomore and ACC “Player of the Week” as a junior, and finished his collegiate career ranked 20th on the all-time Miami list in scoring with 1,159 points as well as 9th in steals with 137.  Following his graduation, Robert played in the NBA’s developmental league and was signed as a free agent by the Miami Heat in 2006. 

 

 

DAVE HOCKADEN
(Inducted in 2006)

One of Greenhills High School’s best all-around athletes, Dave Hockaden earned letters in four different sports: football, basketball, track and baseball. In fact, as a senior the Greenhills student body voted him its “Most Athletic” student. On the football field he was named “Best Offensive Lineman” as a junior and was named “Most Valuable Player” as a senior. His efforts as a senior also earned him a spot on the MVIL All-Star team as well as All-City recognition from The Cincinnati Enquirer. On the hardwood, Dave earned league “honorable mention” honors and helped guide the Pioneers in many memorable efforts, most notably handing Princeton its first loss in their new gymnasium and narrowly missing a titanic upset of state champion Middletown in the 1959 district finals. As a senior, Dave was a member of the 1960 Pioneer track squad that won the league championship and performed on the 880-relay team that set a new MVIL record. Following his graduation in 1960 Dave played football at the University of Louisville, earning three letters as a Cardinal while playing on both sides of the ball. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from U of L in 1965.

 

LARRY HOFMANN
(Inducted in 2005)

Volunteer service to the school district as well as to the community at large is a trademark of Larry Hofmann. A resident of Forest Park, Larry has been involved in various volunteer projects with Forest Park High School, Winton Woods High School, and the City of Forest Park since 1983. He has been a member of the youth softball association for over twenty years and in 1991 served as an assistant coach for the Forest Park High School team that finished fifth in the state. (Of the ten starting players on that Charger squad, Larry had coached seven during their entire playing careers.) Throughout the years, Larry has been instrumental in getting several projects off the ground and completed, including the message sign at the front entrance of Winton Woods High School, the washer, dryer and ice machine in the athletic building, the football stadium press box as well as the visitor side concession stand. When the need for additional space for Warrior athletes and coaches became apparent, Larry played a key role in the organization and planning of the new athletic building. During the construction period he volunteered over 2,000 hours to serve as the construction foreman and plumber. The district has been able to continue calling on him for various advice and labor and he has continued to serve as an active member of the Winton Woods Athletic Boosters for more than twenty years.

DARIUS L. JOHNSON
(Inducted in 2005)

During his high school career at Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools, Darius Johnson perhaps participated in more team victories than any other student-athlete in school district history. Playing soccer and basketball, he played on teams that lost only once during his junior soccer season and only five times combined in basketball during his final two years at Winton Woods. (His final record during his sophomore thru senior seasons in basketball was 60-10.) Darius earned four varsity letters in soccer, was a three-year starter, and was named 1st Team “All-League” as well as 2nd Team “All-City” as a junior and senior. A final testament to his soccer abilities is the fact that he finished second in the city in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons. On the basketball hardwood, Darius helped lead Charger and Warrior squads to high acclaim. He was named 1st Team “All-League” as a sophomore, junior and senior as well as being league MVP following his junior and senior seasons. Other basketball awards earned included being named 2nd Team “All-City” as a junior and senior, 2nd Team “All-District” as a senior and Honorable mention “All-State” also as a senior. He concluded his high school basketball career as the leading scorer in Winton Woods history. After graduation in 1993, Darius played basketball for Skip Prosser at Loyola College (Maryland) where, as a freshman, he started every game and led the conference in steals. He graduated from Loyola in 1997 with a B.A. in finance.

 

 

DICK KERIN
(Inducted in 2005)

Dick Kerin joins his son Kelly (a 2003 inductee) as a member of the Winton Woods Athletic Hall of Fame. He served in many capacities at Greenhills High School from 1971 thru 1983, including coaching Pioneer football and wrestling teams. During his tenure at Greenhills, his football squads won one league championship while playing in the always difficult Hamilton County Suburban League. The Pioneer wrestling teams that he coached won two Division II city championships as well as three Division II sectional and district championships. Dick’s accomplishments in the coaching field have been recognized by many organizations, including: being elected to the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986, receiving the Bron Bacevich Award from Roger Bacon High School in 1997, receiving the Aiken High School Hall of Honor Award in 2000 and an award from the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Football Foundation in 2002. A 1942 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, Dick served in Marine Corps during World War II and has been a member of the Hugh Watson American Legion Post 530 in Greenhills for over 56 years. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State College in 1950 after lettering four years in football and being named to the “All-League” team as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 1982 Dick was elected to the Southwest Missouri State Athletic Hall of Fame.

KELLY KERIN
(Inducted in 2003)

Combining strength, agility and leadership, Kelly Kerin left a legacy of athletic success upon his graduation from Greenhills High School in 1973.  A winner of eight varsity letters for the Pioneers, Kelly competed in football, wrestling and baseball.  For three seasons Kelly played guard on offense and middle guard on defense and was a key component in the resurgence of the Pioneer football program.  He had the ultimate lineman's dream when he picked up a loose fumble against Fairfield and went 55 yards for a touchdown.  Earning 1st Team Defense All-City recognition as a junior and a senior, he was also named Co-captain of the football team as a senior.  Kelly capped his senior season by playing in the East-West All-Star game and being named as the league representative for the prestigious "That's My Boy Award".  Wrestling at three different weight levels in three different years, Kelly was a part of the first wrestling squads in Greenhills history and placed in the league tournament all three years.  As in football, he was named Co-Captain of the wrestling team as a senior.  Following graduation Kelly played football at Hanover College until his graduation in 1977.  As a four-year started for the Panthers, he was a member of four league championship teams and was named N.A.I.A. All-District as a sophomore, junior and senior.

BRIAN VINCENT MERCER
(Inducted in 2004)

Recognized as the first Forest Park High School football player to be named high school "All-American", Brian Mercer was a two-sport star for the Chargers during his high school career. On the gridiron, Brian ended up establishing virtually all of the school rushing records and his 1,725 yards rushing as a senior in 1980 led the city in a year that had six Parade "All-Americans" in the Cincinnati area. He was named All-League and All-City twice and was named to the First Team "All-State" squad as a senior. He capped his tremendous senior season by being named Southwestern Ohio "Player of the Year" as well as beginning the tradition of "All-Americans" at Forest Park by being named to the Parade and Carnation Top 100 "All-American" teams. As a member of the always powerful Charger track teams, Brian earned three varsity letters and was a two time track MVP. He was named to the "All-League" team three times and the "All-City" team twice. His talents and experience were put on display at the state level as he finished eighth in the state in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters while also anchoring the Forest Park state entry in the 400 meter relay. Upon graduation in 1981, Brian accepted a full athletic scholarship from the University of Michigan where he played football for the Wolverines and earned two varsity letters. A series of major injuries ended his playing career and he eventually earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Southeastern University in 1997.

BRANDON CURTIS MIREE
(Inducted in 2006)

One of the most outstanding players in Cincinnati football history, Brandon Miree left a legacy of football excellence at Winton Woods High School. Earning seven letters in football and track, Brandon earned All-City recognition three times along with earning All-League honors four times. He finished his football career with the Warriors by holding no less than six school records, including most rushing yards in a season and career. His 2,455 yards as a senior in 1998 were the best ever for a school in the Cincinnati area and the second best all-time for the entire state of Ohio. As a result, he was named the 1998 “Player of the Year” by The Cincinnati Enquirer. On the track, Brandon was the regional 4x100 champion in 1996 and 1997 and was a regional qualifier in 1997 in the 100-meter dash. He concluded his high school career by being named to The Cincinnati Enquirer’s “Top 50 Male Athletes” list in 1998 and being nominated as LaRosa’s “Male Athlete of the Year”. Brandon played football at the University of Alabama for two years before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh. While playing for the Panthers he was named to the Big East “All-Academic” team twice along with leading Pitt in rushing in 2002 and 2003. His play in Pitt’s 2002 Insight Bowl victory over Oregon State earned him the “Offensive Most Valuable Player” award. Brandon graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2003 with a degree in Public Administration and is in his third season with the Denver Broncos.

NICK SMITH
(Inducted in 2003)

A two-time All-State football player for Forest Park High School, Nick Smith earned numerous honors for his athletic and scholastic abilities.  Playing linebacker and tight end for the Chargers, Nick earned All-Conference, All-City and All-State honors.  His defensive play as a senior earned him listing on eight post-season All-American teams headed by Parade Magazine listing him as one of the top 11 defensive players in the nation. He also letter two years on the varsity basketball team and was named to All-Conference and All-City teams as a senior.  A three-year member of the National Honor Society, Nick was selected by The National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, Greater Cincinnati Chapter as it's 1989 winner of the  "That's My Boy Award" which is emblematic of the Cincinnati area's top football scholar/athlete.  In addition, Nick was selected as Captain for the South squad in the annual North-South All-Star football game in Canton, Ohio.  Upon graduation from Forest Park in 1989, Nick attended the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship and lettered all four years for the Fightin' Irish.  Following graduation from Notre Dame, Nick earned tryouts with the NFL's Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals and played professional football in the Canadian Football League and the World Football League.

PAM EVANS SMITH
(Inducted in 2004)

Earning varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track while a student at Greenhills High School certainly helped to prepare Pam Evan Smith for the rigors and challenge of coaching on the collegiate level. Presently the head basketball coach and associate athletics director at Wittenberg University, her high school athletic experiences were capped by a third place finish in the state track championships as a member of the Lady Pioneer medley relay team. A 1978 Greenhills graduate, Pam played basketball at Wittenberg where she was named team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior. She left Wittenberg with a bachelors degree in biology in 1982, as the school's all-time leading scorer in career points, as well as per game average. She returned to Greenhills in 1982 as head basketball coach of the Lady Pioneers and coached for two seasons before being named head basketball coach at Wittenberg in 1986. Over the course of the next eighteen seasons she has won in excess of 340 games and has a winning percentage of over 70%. Her Lady Tiger squads have won seven regular season conference championships as well as four conference tournament crowns. A five time conference "Coach of the Year" as well as the 1993 NCAA Division III District "Coach of the Year", Pam was inducted into the Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

TOM SMITH
(Inducted in 2002)

Winner of varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track, Tom Smith graduated from Greenhills High School in 1951 as one of the top athletes in school history. In track, Tom graduated holding the long jump record. While in basketball he won All-League and All-City honors as a junior and as a senior. It was on the football field, however, that Tom really made his presence felt. Playing center and tailback on offense and linebacker on defense he was named All-League and All-City his last two years at Greenhills. Voted captain for his senior year in 1950 he finished second in the city in scoring with 111 points and helped the Pioneers to a 9-1 record, a league championship and the #16 ranking in the state by the Associated Press. After four years of playing football at the University of Cincinnati and four years service in Korea with the U.S. Navy, Tom returned to Greenhills to teach and coach for over thirty years in the school district. Besides his Bachelors Degree from UC, Tom also earned a Masters Degree from Xavier University. His years of service to the Greenhills community along with his athletic accomplishments earned him induction into the Greenhills High School Alumni Hall of Fame in 1997.

BEV D. VENTURA
(Inducted in 2006)

A 1974 graduate of Greenhills High School, Bev Ventura was a four-sport participant in an era before girls sports were widely recognized as being varsity caliber on par with the boys. She participated and excelled in volleyball and basketball all four years at Greenhills in addition to being a member of the track and softball teams. As a senior, Bev was a member of the Lady Pioneer squad that won the HCSAA championship in basketball and was undefeated in the track and field shot put event. She took her athletic talents to the University of Cincinnati where she played field hockey, volleyball and basketball. A member of the basketball 1,000 point club at UC, she also finished her collegiate career in the “top 10” all-time in rebounding, rebound average, field goal percentage and free throws made. Bev’s play on the hardwood enabled her to be named “Defensive Player of the Year” in 1976 as well as being named “Most Valuable Player” in 1977 and again in 1978. Bev earned her Associate Degree in 1978 and in 1997 was inducted into UC’s Hall-of-Fame.

TONY WATSON
(Inducted in 2003)

By the time of his graduation from Forest Park High School in 1988, Tony Watson had been a member of teams that won six conference championships, three city championships, four district championships, one regional championship, one state individual championship, one state relay championship and one state team overall championship.  While playing soccer, basketball and running track for the Chargers, Tony earned severn varsity letters and was a member of both the 400-meter relay state championship team as well as the overall state track championship team in 1988.  A three-year starting point guard for the Charger basketball team, Tony earned All-Conference and All-City honors as a junior and senior and was named "Southwestern Ohio Player of the Year" as a senior.  In soccer, Tony won All-Conference, All-City and All-State recognition during his junior and senior seasons, and was voted the conference "Player of the Year" both years. Running track as a senior Tony was All-Conference, All-City and All-State in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints as well as being state champion in the 100-meters.  Named as Forest Park's "Male Athlete of the Year" as a junior and senior, Tony was honored as "Male Career Athlete" for the Class of 1988.  His talents and accomplishments earned him a scholarship to play basketball at Kent State University, where he won two varsity letters before his graduation in 1992.

TRACEY J. WATSON
(Inducted in 2004)

Tracey J. Watson was a force to be reckoned with on the soccer field as well as on the track. A proud member of the first graduating class of Winton Woods High School in 1992 she earned eight varsity letters, four letters in each sport. As a member of the Lady Warrior soccer team, she was named MVP three straight years as well as being named to the All-League team following those same three seasons. Her teammates elected her Co-Captain for both her junior and senior seasons and she was selected by Cincinnati area coaches to play in the East-West All-Star Game. Her track highlights include being named All-League and All-City as a sophomore, junior and senior. As a sophomore she finished third in the state as a member of the Lady Warrior 4x100 relay team along with a fifth place finish in the 4x200 relay and she was a state qualifier in the 4x200 relay as a junior and a senior. In recognition of her athletic accomplishments she was named Winton Woods High School's first female "Career Athlete" for the years 1988-92. Tracey continued her education after graduation from Winton Woods in 1992 earning a bachelor degree from Tennessee State University in 1996 as well as an MBA from Webster University in 1999.

ED WESTERKAMP
(Inducted in 2003)

Known throughout the community as "The Voice of the Warriors",  Ed Westerkamp has enjoyed a long relationship with all three high schools that make up the athletic history of the Winton Woods City School District.  For 31 years, the 1967 graduate of the University of Cincinnati served the district as a Physical Education and Health teacher, a wrestling, football and track coach, Assistant Athletic Director and for ten years Athletic Director at Forest Park and Winton Woods High Schools.  Success on the league, district and state levels was a constant as an administrator at Forest Park High School.  His service as an Assistant Athletic Director included a basketball state championship by the Forest Park Lady Chargers in 1985.  During his tenure as Athletic Director at Forest Park, the boys track squads won back-to-back state championships in 1988 and 1989.  His hard work and dedication helped spark the creation of wrestling programs at Greenhills in 1970 and Forest Park in 1972.  As head wrestling coach for both schools, "Westy" put squads on the mat that always competed hard and were highly successful. For his inspiration and long-term dedication to the sport of wrestling as both coach and official, Ed was selected to the Southwest Ohio Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002.  After retirement from full-time service in 1999, "Westy" has continued to serve as the public address announcer for all home Warrior football and basketball contests.

PIERRE C. WOOTEN
(Inducted in 2006)

Pierre Wooten earned ten letters while playing football, basketball, track and baseball for Winton Woods High School, earning All-City recognition in basketball and track. His efforts in all sports were recognized by his being named “Boys Athlete of the Year” in 1997 and 1998 along with his being named “Boys Career Athlete” for his highly successful high school athletic career (1995-1998). On the hardwood as a senior he was nominated to the McDonald’s “All-American” team and was the “Most Valuable Player” in the District 16 East vs. West basketball all-star game. Earning a basketball scholarship to Winthrop University, Pierre played on four Big South Conference championship teams and was the 2003 Big South Conference “Scholar-Athlete of the Year”. His play as a senior was rewarded with his being named to the 1st team “All-Big South Conference” as well as being voted the Big South Conference MVP by collegeinsider.com. Pierre finished his collegiate career by being the 12th player in Winthrop history to join the 1,000 point club with 1,019 points while playing in 120 career games, the second most in school history. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2002 and finished his Master of Business Administration degree in 2005. The past couple of years have seen him playing professional basketball in Europe while also attending NBA camps in Denver and Charlotte.

ANDI NIEMANN-YOUNG
(Inducted in 2003)

Winner of 11 varsity letters and a 1982 graduate of Greenhills High School, Andi Niemann-Young also received numerous conference, city state and national awards.  During her years at Greenhills, Andi played soccer, basketball and softball and was named as Captain in all three sports.  Soccer was the sport that she really excelled in and her accomplishments in the sport eventually earned her )along with her sister) the first soccer scholarship ever awarded to a female student-athlete by the University of Cincinnati.  An All-Conference, All-City and All-State performer for the Lady Pioneers as a junior and senior, Andi completed her high school career by being named a "McDonald's All-American" as well as being one of the first female soccer athletes in the Cincinnati area to earn a place on the National Soccer Coaches Association of American High School All-American Team.  As preparation for her college career, Andi played on various local, state, and national All-Star teams most notably for Team USA in West Germany in 1982.  After her graduation from Greenhills she went on to UC and earned All-Regional honors, was named Co-Captain her senior year and earned Dean's List recognition several times.  She earned her BS degree in Nursing with a concentration on Sports Medicine in 1987.
